This last week or so, Matt and I have started walking around the neighborhood more. It's a daily walk that takes at least an hour or so. We walk about 1-2 miles, depending on how cool the day is, our level of energy, and the presence of a camera.

The first day out, I brought my camera, but forgot the SD card. Feh. The second and subsequent days (almost every day of the week), I made sure to have SD card inserted, battery charged, and camera in pocket. Good thing, too. I got some great shots of things:

Our building:

Some flowers:

And some of my favorite, cute little houses in the area (they look like something you'd see in kids' story books - except for the square stucco one):

Oh, and the other day when I was out at the grocery store, I actually turned the car around to get a picture of these guys working on laying a pipe. I mean, who doesn't like hard hats, Carhartt, and work boots?

After almost 3 hours of good sleep, I was jolted awake by sharp, searing pain flaring up in my left thigh and tingling in my feet - as usual for the past 14 days or so. No position I took, stretching that I did, or prayers I screamed in my head over clenched fists did any good.

So, alas, I'm up for a bit on a hard-ass surface till the FOUR Motrin kick in full steam. I've tried all the doctor-approved remedies with pillows, no soft chairs, Motrin, slight stretching, and the stuff's working, just a LOT slower than I want it to. For instance, the time it takes for the inflammation to go down is much less time now. At the beginning of this bout of sciatica, I had to wait around 2-4 hours for the pain to subside, and now it's less than 30 minutes or so. Then, I can get 3 hours of sleep!

The Catch 22? If I lose about 10 pounds, the pain goes away. I can't exercise to LOSE the f*cking 10 pounds right now. Sooo, I'm just trying to eat sensibly, but that just takes longer. I want results YESTERDAY!

Screaming at one's body only makes one seem crazy. Right?

Happily, during the day yesterday, I chose to ignore the pain and work around it without relying too much on other body parts. It worked ALL DAY LONG! Even when I took a quick nap here and there. So, that'll be my mentality today and tonight, too! Here's to good results!

So, yesterday was the NYC AIDS Walk 2009. By the time I arrived at 10AM, about 3/4 of the people had already left and all the fanfare and jubilee (that to me is really so unnecessary and over the top) was finished. I was able to walk right up to the registration table, get my packet, walk quickly over to the refreshments area for waters, chips, and fruit, and then begin walking. The walk itself wasn't nearly as packed as in previous years, but I was one of the more than 45,000 people who walked raising (so far)

$5,603,409!!

How exciting!! (And you can still donate, if you haven't!! Many thanks to all who have already donated.)

The day was quite gray and overcast. There was a thunderstorm forecast, but thankfully, because of my trusty umbrella, THAT never happened!

I left the house at 9:15 AM, and got home at 2:45 PM. All in all a great day of walking, sightseeing, and photography (I used my little point-and-click that day because of a previous "theft" during the walk that I won't go into here...). Here are a few pictures documenting my trek (on Picasa - you can watch the slideshow here, or click on it to read through my comments of the photos.).

This morning my weight showed 9 pounds fewer than Monday! How's that possible? When I weighed myself on Monday morning, my body was at its emptiest. Then it started to get rid of all the other crap that was in there - dough, chocolate, cookies, etc. My belly this morning was feeling a little tighter than it had in about 3 weeks, so I weighed myself. I couldn't believe my eyes when it was 9 pounds down! Oh, and for the record, we've upped our caloric intake to just over 1000 calories. By the weekend or starting on Monday, we'll up it to 1200-1500.

Matt's jealous because somehow he's lost "only" 3 pounds since beginning. I keep telling him that our bodies are different and they each handle weight and weight loss differently. Plus, when we work out, because I'm at a higher weight than he is to begin with, my calorie burning is much greater than his. He doesn't have as much to push around! lol

But, we're on the road to a thinner us. I'm expecting to be down at least 35-40 pounds by May, which should be reasonable, doable, and healthy (roughly 2 pounds a week).

Though we're not trying to starve ourselves, we are trying to shock our bodies back into healthy eating - and fast. Yesterday, I didn't pass the 1000 calorie mark, and today, this is what I've eaten:

Blueberries
Danon Lt & Fit Yogurt
Skim Milk
Carrots, raw
Chinese cabbage (pak-choi)
Grouper steamed
Crudite - Caul, Broc, Carrots, Tomatoes
Altoids Cinnamon Mints (1 svg=3 pieces)
Wakame Seaweed salad
Daikon radish cooked

All totaled with my servings, I haven't maxed out 700 calories yet. AND we're STUFFED! Can't eat another bite, though we really, really should. Maybe we'll make a vitamin shake or something later - packed with fiber.

Added to the low-calorie diet, we've each walked at least 20 minutes and worked out yesterday and today for about 30 minutes (I'm doing more upper body right now and Matt's doing full body stuff). Here's hoping we stick to it (gritting our teeth sometimes) and feeling better soon!

All those weeks of cookies, beer, cakes, steaks, beer, pies, ribs, beer, and biscuits just packed themselves right on my inner thighs and chin - like they belonged there!! UGH!

I got up this morning and after a bit weighed myself. My drama last night about not reaching down to 1500 calories was frankly unwarranted: I've lost another 3 pounds!! I had gained about 4 pounds over the vacation with my family, which was disconcerting because I had basically stayed on my diet. For 9 days, I was pretty stringent, although I wasn't really exercising (for which I'm grateful to [livejournal.com profile] sparkygearhead for reminding me, and who is totally correct - I need to get back on the treadmill or just back into the gym to workout!). I have a goal of being 10 pounds less than my current weight by the end of the month, which is totally doable and healthy.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement!

was thinking about sending the AIDS Walk NY a check for some amount to sponsor a walker in my company. Then I thought to myself, "What about me? Why can't I walk it myself and generate donations, too?" I thought that I could double or triple the donation by motivating others to walk with me, so that's what I'm doing. I'd like to organize a team to do the NY AIDS Walk on May 20. The walk actually starts at 10 AM that Sunday, which is not too early (which I like!!), and there's an aerobic pre-workout, if you're interested.

So, how's about it? Who's interested in drumming up some money, investing a little energy and sweat into doing something for yourself and others? I know that a few of us are on weight loss programs of our own, and this would be an excellent way of doing our workout, too, for a couple of days, right?

AIDS Walk NYC

Let me know if you'd like to join me by Friday, May 11. I will set up up the team (we can be under Friends and Families). There is no fee, but I hope that we can raise upwards of at least $1000 (if everyone on my initial email distribution list donated or supported me at least $25 apiece, that would already be $1200! Then the money I put in personally would be "buttah"!!).

Let's WALK!
