Here are pictures from time we spent on board the Brilliance of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship (no destinations are covered here - this is simply a brochure for the trip, if you will). The ship is pretty old, but it still has a lot of charm. Enjoy!
GREECE pics - finally done
Apr. 21st, 2012 04:30 pmI've made a mission to get through constructing the updates to and posting the 1st Greece trip to Athens and Sounio (I know - the Map calls it Sounion, but all the signs say, "Sounio"...). Anyway, it was an amazing day in Athens and would definitely want to return to Greece - in particular the Greek Isles, but that's another post for another day.

Best Photo Gallery Title Ever
Mar. 31st, 2011 03:17 pmMy sister posted the link to this photo gallery on her Facebook wall the other day. It's totally worth reviewing and made me giggle out loud quite a few times. You can tell that some of the pictures are reworked to come degree, but I believe that they're all old photos nonetheless.
Mid Fall Pictures
Nov. 3rd, 2010 11:39 amThroughout the last month or so, I've been taking lots of fall pictures - everywhere - from Newark, through NJ, and in NYC. If you're on Facebook, you might notice some duplicates; never hurts to see smiling faces again and again. Anyway, enjoy the photos!
Warner Brothers & My Birthday
Sep. 8th, 2010 01:47 amWhile we were in LA, one of our day trips was to the back lots of Warner Brothers. Matt's sister is REALLY connected to lots of people and places, which is great for us. We took lots of pictures, but only a few of them could I post from the back lots and stages. There were movies and TV shows in production, for which we can't show the sets till after they all air. So, I'm sharing judiciously.
We were escorted and introduced around initially by Robert Duncan McNeill, aka Tom Paris from Star Trek Voyager (yes, I got a picture with him). Robbie, as he introduced himself, is the director of Chuck! We got to see them filming a few of the scenes!! It was an interesting thing to participate in and see happening up close and personal. During the day we saw (from a distance and) met a few of the stars from the show: Scott Krinsky (met - very cool guy!!), Adam Baldwin (met - is VERY strange), Jesse Heiman (met - also on Glee!), Joshua Gomez (saw from a distance), and a couple others, including some of the SWAT guys from the set.
After Robbie left us, we basically had free reign of the back lots - he let us in, gave us a short tour, and then let us loose! It was REALLY cool! The only drawback was that we didn't know what buildings or sets were used in which shows. The only places we knew were used in certain filming was plaques on the Stages. We did, however, find buildings from the sets of the Gilmore Girls, Two and a Half Men, and TRUE BLOOD!!
Hollywood, Hollywood Blvd., Sunset Blvd, Beverly Hills, and Rodeo Drive were our next quick destinations. We finally made it to sushi for my birthday dinner, which was REALLY good. The maître d’ at the restaurant was exceptionally handsome and had that questionable lingering eye contact. That was a fun day.
Still working on the other photos from that week. 4000+ photos are hard to work through and hone down into bite-sized chunks!!

Disneyland Pictures!
Aug. 22nd, 2010 07:03 amWe finished the first round of pictures. Check them out!! These are pictures and videos of us on our trip out to and arrival in Huntington Beach, CA, and then our day at Disneyland/California Adventure. It was a lot of fun.
Problem with Disneyland was it was built for 30K people, but they allow 80K+ people into the park daily. That makes park-goers pretty irritable, which makes the cast members irritable. No one smiled. No one laughed. No one was happy - AT THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH!! allegedly...
One cast member all day asked us how our day was going. We mentioned the rude, unfriendly, and unhappy people all over the park. THIS CAST member said, "Yeah... we've kind of given up. If my manager treats me a this level (marking off his chest height), then I'll treat him or her just above that. If a customer treats me at this level,(marking off his waist height), then I treat them just about here (marking off his belly button level). People aren't happy anymore and we're kinda tired of it here."
WE would NEVER that sort of thing coming from a CAST MEMBER at Disney World in FL. NEVER. They would say something like, "Oh, that's a shame; I can't believe people would be like that here! This is the most wonderful place to be! Here's an extra sticker for you. Have a Magical Day!" And we'd walk away with a smile on our faces.
Not in Disneyland. This was a conversation I had with a rude female cast member at a concession stand:
Me: "Hello. Could I please have a small cup of water?"
CM: "Why do you want water?" (stoic, standing behind the register, and not moving)
Me: "I'd like to clean off our table over there for the kids (pointing at the filthy table)."
CM: "Someone should be cleaning those tables." (still not moving from behind her register)
Me: "I agree; someone other than me should clean the table. No one is around for me to ask to clean the table."
CM: "Someone should clean your tables, sir." (still not moving or looking like she wanted to help me in any way)
Me: "Could I please have a cup of water?"
CM: BIG SIGH. Shuffle shuffle shuffle. She got a little cup and filled it up half way. She didn't look at me when she handed it to me. In fact, she looked away from me as she pushed it halfway across the counter.
Me: "Thank you." And I smiled at her, hoping for a glimmer of happiness or some emotion.
CM: Silence.
That would NEVER have happened in Disney World. I mentioned this interaction to Matt's sister, who's been to Disney World literally 30+ times with her family as a kid and with her family with her kids. She was appalled and relayed similar experiences. But nothing topped our two spectacularly unfriendly interactions with cast members that day.
I just wish we could have gotten to California Adventure a little earlier than we had. I would like to have seen more of that park. Seems like it was built more for older people (outside of Bug's Land).

From a Distance
Jun. 26th, 2010 04:51 pmThis is a picture of Matt and me from a distance when we didn't know someone was taking a picture. I don't know how many of these exist, but the friend who took this one takes TONS of pictures (like me) and is extremely quick to post them - that guy (I suppose like me) was born for social networking sites like Facebook.

We went to Blowoff last night and had fun. It took us just at an hour to get to the dance, though. At that time of night (midnight), it should normally have taken us less than 30 minutes to get to Tribeca from our house down the West Side Hwy. But, because I insisted we go left out of the garage instead of right, we had to go through a sobriety check point near the house. Little did the cops know we were heading into the city to drink and dance!
By the time we got to the tunnel, there was a TON of traffic there and IN THE CITY. Our GPS took us through the city instead of around because it was more direct. Matt was fit to be tied when we got into the dance and the thick, packed crowd didn't help. All of a sudden Matt started getting a headache. We danced together for a little while and just as he was getting into it, I accidentally hit someone else's drink, which splashed onto the guy (from DC) and Matt. I'm such a clutz sometimes! I had had only two beers by that point, too. A hired photographer was taking an event photo of me and some other guys and my hand hit the drink to my side. Ho hum. What Matt has to put up with.
We got home around 4:30 and went pretty much straight to bed. Getting ready - now - to go to the Muscle Bear Cruise! YIPEE!!

Get Your Facebook Freak On!!
Mar. 17th, 2010 02:07 amUnapologetically and therapeutically, I have to post about this one instance that has remained for the last few days as one of the strangest things I've encountered in Facebook from a childhood friend. Someone from my childhood posted a picture (I have a copy of the picture for some reason in my collection) of our church van. I'm not sure where we were headed in the van in the picture, but our church did many puppet mission trips to NYC. We also took the van to week-long Southern Baptist summer camps and to ski retreats. On the ski retreats, we skied during the day, returned to the church-owned cabin, cooked & cleaned up from dinner, and had Bible study.
There have been various and many comments (50+!!) about the picture with memories of the trips we took in that particular van in the 70s and 80s, and that that van was replaced by a bigger van/bus with bigger windows, a great stereo, and A/C!!
One of the folks who posted - and the most recent as of Mar. 14 - is a couple of years younger than me, but we used to have sleep-overs together as kids, went to school with each other, and considered each other friends. His older sister was my age, but there's apparently no contact between them at all. I think I remember a few years ago his mother passing away, which made me sad. They had a beautiful home and she seemed like a good mom. She was always so sweet to me, too.
This was his posted comment to the picture of the church van: "I was not in that van. However, I love you all and ask if anyone remembers poop in a cup on the way home from a ski trip."
I have no idea if he's joking. I have no idea what kind of person he is now, although his pictures present him as a rocker - he plays the drums. He also looks vastly different from how I remember him and his hair at one point was really long and permed (80s scary male perms). The question left the inferred image of "Two Girls, One Cup" in my mind, although I never actually saw the video (thank goodness!!).
Comment welcome!

New Point-and-Click Ordered!!
Jan. 29th, 2010 03:47 amThanks for all the camera feedback!! We selected a Canon Powershot S90, which had GREAT reviews everywhere. Many people who gave us feedback mentioned Canon. We compared all the Canons with all the Nikons and the Panasonic Lumix. The Canon PowerShot S90 shines above them all and it's the newer model of Canon that people said that they loved. We both have experienced Sony's and they were a little too shaky for us. We could never trust that we'd get a good shot.
We, of course bought it through Amazon (for the points). The funny thing is, at the end of the purchase, Amazon always makes a suggestion of a catch phrase to expedite future purchases. We never do this, but the random phrase for this purchase was:
"Matthew's Wide Stance"
Out of everything it could have thrown together, it chose the one SPECIFIC phrase that Matt and I have been saying to each other. We saw Outrage before Christmas, which shows Larry Craig saying, "I'm not gay! I just have a wide stance!"
Now, Amazon is secretly making fun of Larry Craig. LOVE IT!!

New Camera!
Mar. 6th, 2009 04:51 amToday, a buddy of mine and I met for lunch at The Dish in Chelsea. I toted along my new Nikon D40 that some of you are familiar with already (from previous posts or replies).
mondragon and I exchanged a couple of things today about his expired film work, developing them, and so forth. He does EXCELLENT work and I'm always impressed and in awe of the things he puts out. Great eye and composition.
Here is my first day breaking in my new camera that I bought from my partner's brother-in-law for a wonderful price. I've painstakingly picked out initially two really good lenses for it over the last month or so, along with a mounted flash (more for indoor and portrait shots) and two filters. I discovered today that I have to be more selective with the filters, even though they happily lend themselves to multiple mounting. One gets a black blur in the corners of the photos because the lens "expects" perhaps only one filter. Otherwise, I will expect to do some cropping and have to plan out the extra space needed to crop out the blurs.
I was working on field depth as well as the automatic settings that highlight either greater aperture or greater shutter speed. The photos with motion blurs are with a extended aperture, and the pictures with deep shadows are with quicker shutter speeds. All today were taking with the 18-55mm lens including both a UV and polarizing filter.
#1 - Joyce Theater Marquis (done with the Automatic everything setting)

#2 - Uptown Shot of 8th Ave from Chelsea (higlighted shutter speed - deeper shadow)

#3 - Uptown Shot of 8th Ave from Chelsea - Taxis in motion (higlighted aperture - greater blurs)

These are just a few. I'll post more tomorrow after I've looked at them a little more. There's one below that shows the profound corner blurs that I was mentioning due to the filters (I believe). I'm going to remove one of them to see if it makes a difference, and it really should. I will have to be more judicious with their use over time.
#4 - 6th Ave Library (served as background in The Fisher King) - Auto Setting - stark blur

All in all in was a good test day.

New Orleans - Mardi Gras
Feb. 28th, 2009 04:15 amOver the top. That's all that comes out of my mouth. Over the top. New Orleans KNOWS how to party and keep partying till all hours of the night, day, and week. There is no comparison that can be struck with Oktoberfest, which we experienced at the end of 2008. Different party altogether, and much different culture, of course.
Over the top. We left the hotel at noon every day for coffee at Starbucks, which might or might not be open that day, depending on the parade route. When we got into the city, we took a much-needed 4-hour nap. That evening we had dinner at Emeril's Delmonico restaurant. The dinner was outstanding and everything (and more) that we had anticipated. Out front the evening's first parade had begun and we joined in to catch our first batch of beads.
Every day was different, though also the same. Different from the people and things we experienced, but the same in that it was loud and we found ourselves navigating down the same streets - not meaning to.
This guy was carrying a BOOBAH puppet!! BOOBAH is a British kids' show about atom particles shaped like stars living in spoons. They fart to fly out of their spoons, spin around above the earth, and vomit out a rainbow for kids to find a daily gift. VERY weird and definitely worth an acid trip to watch - and best WITHOUT the acid.

We caught up with
jefferzephyr and
profundis for drinks and bead-tossing at Oz on Bourbon St. We met up with them again for dinner on Mardi Gras at Adolfo's on Frenchman St. - great place, btw. Had a great time with those two. For Ash Wednesday, JP (
jefferzephyr) met us for Beareoke at Oz in the evening. He put in for a song, but had to leave before his name was called. I sang "I Will Survive".
We'll be posting more pictures of the week in the coming days along with other observations of the whole experience. It's all too much to put into one singular, dedicated post. Enjoy this first set, and keep your eyes peeled for more.

Great Mem Day Weekend Kick-Off
May. 24th, 2008 11:39 amLast night after work, Matthew met me at the Sahag Workshop on 49th and Madison Ave. for a hair cut. He was treating me to my first (and definitely not last) celebrity hair cut. The guy who styled my hair, Johnny Wojtanowicz, was really cool. He styled a number of different celebrities in Vegas for two years before moving to NY, one of whom is Kathy Hilton. He still has clients in Vegas who fly him out freelance to do their hair. He's 23 years old and is already known in the celebrity community. How cool is that? The hair cut and process was definitely informative, educational, interesting, calming, and wonderful. The setting was serene and tranquil - water fountain adorned with bamboo shoots at my station and molded stone counter with an other-worldly structure holding my oval mirror. My scalp was massaged with the wash and conditioning and then the cut began. You can read about the cut and the styling on the website, but they cut your hair dry instead of wet, and follow the cutting with the shape of your head, rather than just snipping. The layering, the talking, the discussion, and ultimately the product rendered the hair cut below. It's pretty cool at the outset, but Johnny pointed out that they're "all about the grow-out here", meaning that it will look better and better as it grows out. (In some of the pictures I took, it almost looked like I have a forming bald spot. I wouldn't be at all scared of that - much like my gray hair, I would embrace it because it's about the man I'm becoming, but all the hair stylists have told me that it's not a bald spot, it's just how it looks directly after the hair cut. Maybe they're being generous, but until it's a proper, evident, no-bald-spot-barred bald spot, it's not one. LOL!) All in all a great experience and I'll do it again (and for the cost curious, it wasn't all that bad... not as expensive as I thought it was going to be.).

I have to thank...
Mar. 24th, 2008 04:24 pmI must reach out and thank
samblasted for the animated face pics. I took some shots of Matt with my camera whilst awaiting my bowling before Christmas. The background was kinda cool and I asked him to take some face pics of me for use on here, but then we decided to make them animated. Granted, I believe I've seen many others, but I really liked
samblasted's and his looks far better than mine. But I have to give him props for the inspiration.

CHIT PICs - Finally had a moment
Nov. 4th, 2007 04:34 pmHere are the long-awaited photos from last weekend in DC. We went bowling, did horribly over all (
madlizard keeps reminding me that my doubles weren't that bad). If you can't see any of the photos, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. They're in flickr.com, so I could just add you to my contacts list...
