Delish: Centro Vinoteca

Last night at Centro Vinoteca, dinner was pretty good; not awesome, but OK!

When we came in, the hostess offered us a larger table, but we had to wait a couple of minutes for them to reset it for just us two. It was pretty slow, and even the upstairs wasn't open. We were right next to the window, which looked out onto 7th Ave. across from Caliente. Great location. We got a bottle of "Cantine dela Manna" (sp?) - Chardonnay from Puglia (Italy) at the bar and had our waitress take it to our table. It was really nice that people stopped by to say, "Happy Anniversary!" I had put in the reservation that it was our anniversary and we wanted a more secluded, romantic table. They came through for us!
We each got a complimentary tasting plate with three things:
- A zucchini & parmigiano fritter on a spicy tomato sauce
- The "BLT" (pancetta, frisee & tomato confit crostini), and
- A Feather Ridge Farm truffled deviled egg.
Fantastic selections. We discovered it was still NYC's Restaurant Week and looked over the prix fixe menu, but decided to go with the regular menu.
We shared everything we ordered as well as the grilled octopus over white bean puree, arugula & fresno peppers. YUM! (but Uncle Nick's on 9th Ave. or Ethos on 3rd Avedoes better...) We also ordered sides with our dinners: brussel sprouts and duck fat Yukon gold fingerling potatoes - very tasty.
Matt had:
1) Roasted beet & baby argula salad Dipalo’s ricotta, toasted hazelnuts & vincotto
2) Grilled rack of lamb with mint-caper salsa verde and eggplant caponata.
I had:
1) Caesar salad with white anchovies
2) House-cured pork chop savoy cabbage, pine nuts, currants & Mutsu apple butter
For dessert, we had cups of coffee (it was only 7:15 by this point) and shared the sweet tarallucci (light cookies) with salty caramel & the hazelnut cake with ice cream (not Matt's favorite...).
All in all, it was a pleasant venture. Looking over the menus, though, the brunch sounds like fun on a Sunday. Might go back there for a simple get-together with friends, but we'll probably start looking elsewhere for our anniversary dinner destination.
