Willingly ignorant
May. 7th, 2008 08:21 amYou know what I find sad? People who have seen you, know that you're in their world somehow, somewhere, but when they look at you and you nod a "Hello..." at them, there's no recognition. This willing ignorance of your fellow commuter would be completely understandable for the most part, but these people live in my building. When we're on the elevator or getting our mail, I always say hello and wish them a good day. Sometimes they acknowledge my existence and sometimes they just hide behind their mail, hoping not to be seen or spoken to.
Friends say, "Welcome to NY!" And "It's actually a blessing. In some instances I agree. Like the guy who got on the bus after I had taken my seat. I saw him almost push a woman out from the bus door when she (possibly innocently and ignorantly) went the wrong way to get onto the bus, therevy jumping ahead of him. That action was fully and unequivocably against Port Authority and NJ Transit etiquette. He yelled at her twice and seethed, "hey lady, get out of line! Go that way! Nice try!" Then he got on the bus himself surveying the bus to plop down his ass and walked far past me, muttering and spitting something more under his breath. Guess he didn't bring his wife flower (God forbid he is actually married!).
