Early vs late
May. 25th, 2007 09:59 amWhat a GORGEOUS day! Already at 75 degrees when I walked out of my house. It's gonna be a scorcher for sure. Sometimes I love global warming and sometimes I don't. Today's not too bad, but it's a shame that it's only gonna get that much hotter that much quicker. Then I'll be pining for the Autumn and Winter too soon.
As I walked to the bus stop this morning, I saw my bus stopping to pick up about 10 people, and thought I guaged my gate right to make it at least to the point that I could make the bus stop... but, alas, it didn't happen and the bus pulled away. It looked at first as if the driver would have stopped, but no. I walked down to the next stop (getting in that little extra walking) and picked up the next bus. I started sweating profusely because the air wasn't working and I was sitting in the sun. The ride got better and the air started really kicking in full force within about 5 minutes or so, and then the bus sort of stalled. In the Lincoln Tunnel, no less. The driver was revving the engine and the bus wasn't moving. There was a HUGE open lane in front of us. No one else could get in it either because of the tunnel laws; if you switch lanes in the tunnel, you get a major fine in the mail or you get pulled over when you depart the tunnel. I could just picture the horror that I envisioned yesterday happening to me today!! Murphy's Law for sure.
The bus dropped us off clear on the opposite side of the station from the subway, which was great because I had to walk the block across the building and down. The subway trip down to my stop was normal and then I saw him. This cute Puerto Rican guy I see when I'm on much earlier trains. He's going to the same stop as I and each time I see him, I think, "He looks so much like Raymond's father." Raymond was my best friend growing up and I always had a major crush on his dad - throughout my childhood. Anyway, waiting to get off the train he was right next to me.
I took off my headphones and said, "You must have missed your train this morning; I usually see you on here much earlier."
He looked at me directly, smiled really nicely, and said, "Yep, missed it - getting in a little late today."
A thought flashed through my mind, "He even smiles like Ray's dad! But he's much younger than Ray's dad was when I knew him."
"Well, it's a holiday weekend: Who could blame you?" I replied.
He goes, "I'm leaving early, too. You must have missed the train, too," and seemed interested in my answer.
"Nah, the bus; I'm in Jersey."
"Oh, cool. Heading home early, too, huh?"
"Yep, I am! Looking forward to a good weekend."
We got off and exchanged well wishes for the long weekend. Nice exchange; people are typically friendly and especially so on a Friday - excited that they have a couple of days free from the rat race.
