Not smelling toast...

There's a distinct smell / aroma in the air. It's good and homey and makes me think of my grandmother cooking in the autumn. Corn. Stewing corn. The essence was almost gone before I could put my finger on the discription. It's not the smell of toast, which is supposed to signify the onslaught of a stroke (right?), but my grandmother's stewing corn. What's that signify? Especially on a bus in the Lincoln Tunnel pulling into Manhattan on a rainy, dreary day? What would I be smelling corn?
