Over heard today - so sweet:

Guy #1: "Have you ever heard of Prairie Home Companion?"
Guy #2: "No, what's that?"
Guy #1: "It's this radio show on NPR (National Public Radio) that airs on Saturday evening; reminds me of when I was a kid."
Guy #2: "Oh yeah?"
Guy #1: "Yeah, they have music and last weekend they had this really great band!"
Guy #2: "Oh yeah?"
Guy #1: "Yeah, and the band's going on tour."
Guy #2: "You don't say."
Guy #1: "I looked 'em up and they'll be heading to Britain first, though. But they were so good. This one girl played the crap out of her clarinet - like I've never heard it played before. So good!"

Background to this and why it's so sweet:

The Prairie Home Companion is a terribly nostalgic show. It makes me think of A Christmas Story: Kids in the pre-TV years used to hover around the radio with their parents to listen to the radio shows, Roosevelt's fireside chats, mini-dramas like War of the Worlds.  I did a self-study course in college on German radio plays from the 1960s and 1970s, which was really fun and interesting.

I just cannot for the life of me imagine someone playing the "crap out of her clarinet" before. What must that sound like?

The must-see recording of Rihanna's SNL performance last week.  I can't get the song or the tight, intricate, SICK choreography out of my head, either!

No matter what Tokyo or Seoul say, this is NOT the Barbra Streisand song:
We were grocery shopping the other day at H Mart (one of our favorite - Korean - stores - and happily there are 4 within a 4-mile radius of our house). They always play their J-POP party dance America fun music NOW-turu and very loud-turu.

Compare that rendition to the "original". Seems like the Ooo-oooo-ooo-oooo Duck Sauce folks in the background have sold their little ditty around the world-turu.

It's somebody's birthday today
It's somebody's birthday today
The candles are lighted on somebody's cake
and we're all invited for somebody's sake
An old-fashioned table is set
for the one that we'll never forget
Happy Birthday to you and many more too
Because it's your birthday today.

This is an old song. I heard it at the very end of a video this morning that brought tears to my eyes. My sister sent this link on 22 Words this morning about secrets that this guy has collected over a few years. You should really watch this video - especially toward the end.  I tend to do the same thing that that person did - and how sweet a memory.

May you always walk in sunshine
Slumber warm when night winds blow
May you always live with laughter
For a smile becomes you so

May good fortune find your doorway
May the bluebird sing your song
May no trouble travel your way
May no worry stay too long

May your heartaches be forgotten
May no tears be spilled
May old acquaintance be remembered
And your cup of kindness filled

And may always be a dreamer
May your wildest dream come true
May you find someone to love
As much as I love you

And may always be a dreamer
May your wildest dream come true
May you find someone to love
As much as I love you

So, on the trip to California, when Matt and I met up with [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], we went to sing Karaoke at "Elvis!?" - a place in Fountain Valley, CA. It was really fun, and as I mentioned on a previous post, I wanted to post some videos.

I didn't hear any screams coming from the California corner of LJ or FB, so here are three of them:

Tim singing "What A Wonderful World"

Robert & Steve singing "Queen of Hearts"

Steve singing "Won't You Be My Neighbor?"

Finally, I've finished putting together, configuring, selecting, and posting the best pictures from our trip to the OC. You can find them on my Picasa album. We met up with [livejournal.com profile] martini_tim, [livejournal.com profile] bigsabu, and [livejournal.com profile] animbear for lunch at their favorite spot, Curry House. [livejournal.com profile] mondragon happened to be in town, too, from back home in NJ and he was able to meet us for lunch and coffee afterward.

We spent the day with the OC boys (except Greg, who is actually an original OC boy) after lunch. We went to a Japanese/Korean shopping center for a couple of hours of private Karaoke. It was a VERY fun experience! The place was called "Elvis!?" and we got to enter Barbra Streisand for the afternoon (that was our Karaoke room). We sang songs like "What a Wonderful World" (Tim), "Won't You Be My Neighbor" (Steve), "Magic" (Steve & Robert), "Fire" (Tim), "Running Up That Hill" (Reid), "Queen of Hearts" (Robert & Steve), and "One Week" (Robert & Matt - who wouldn't get on the mic!!). We sang more, but some of these I videoed and am posting on my YouTube channel today; they were too large for Picasa and kept bombing during the upload.

After Karaoke, we went next door to a Shabu-Shabu restaurant, something neither Matt nor I had ever tried. That was really tasty, too, and lots of fun! We drove down to Laguna Beach to see the sunset and send the boys off home.

The day was too short!! We had so much fun. [livejournal.com profile] martini_tim, [livejournal.com profile] bigsabu, and [livejournal.com profile] animbear are so much fun and creative. Can't wait till the next time!!

Now, they just all have to get their asses to NYC!

Far Away

Far Away...Far Away..Far Away
Oh I...Always try to save time.
In Life...nothing works the same twice
You know Jealousy..Jealousy...Jealousy...is still a friend of mine.
But it's gotta be, gotta be, gotta be worth another try

Cuz when I'm feeling you close, and when I'm feeling your shape.
And when you already know and now it's getting close
And when the lights go on
I can see it...all.
In every single day.
And I'm telling you now...
I'm never far away...I'm never far away.

So come on...
Stop it if you're wondering
There's no wrong...
Wrong in what we're doing
So Stop it, Stop if you're wondering.
I've got it all figured out
Just keep on doing what you're doing
And watch me turn it around..and around...and around...

Cuz when I'm feeling you close, and when I'm feeling your shape.
And when you already know and now it's getting close
And when the lights go on
I can see it...all.
In every single day.
And I'm telling you now...
I'm never far away...I'm never far away.

The video where I heard this was awful - about car crashes and people getting hit by cars when folks run red lights. I REALLY LIKE THIS SONG, but can't find it. The thing on the video says M1-Far Away, but that doesn't make sense. Can't find the artist. Can someone help?? PLEASE?

UPDATE: Found it on Amazon and bought the single; I remembered I had a promotional coupon for an MP3 download! SCORE!! YIPPEE!

Just found Robbie Williams' song Bodies. Never heard it before. This guy has really interesting lyrics - every time. Compelling. I found this song to be different from many other songs I've heard from him. I found this through looking up Cahill Club Mixes on Bearshare (bought a legal copy). I REALLY like the remix, which I heard first, but this is the original.

God gave me the sunshine,
Then showed me my lifeline
I was told it was all mine,
Then I got laid on a ley line
What a day, what a day,
And your Jesus really died for me
Then Jesus really tried for me

UK and entropy,
I feel like its ****in’ me
Wanna feed off the energy,
Love living like a deity
What a day, one day,
And your Jesus really died for me
I guess Jesus really tried for me

Bodies in the Bodhi tree,
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family,
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery,
And that’s the way it’s gonna be

All we’ve ever wanted
Is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection
From my reflection,
I want perfection

Praying for the rapture,
‘Cause it’s stranger getting stranger
And everything’s contagious
It’s the modern middle ages
All day every day
And if Jesus really died for me
Then Jesus really tried for me

Bodies in the Bodhi tree,
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family,
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery,
And that’s the way it’s gonna be

All we’ve ever wanted
Is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection
From my reflection,
I want perfection

Bodies in the Bodhi tree,
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family,
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery,
Bodies in the bodhi tree,
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family,
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery,
And that’s the way it’s gonna be

All we’ve ever wanted
Is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
So God save me rejection
From my reflection,
I want perfection

Jesus didn’t die for you, what do you want?
(I want perfection)
Jesus didn’t die for you, what are you on?
Oh Lord
(Jesus really died for you) Ohh
(Jesus really died for you)
(Jesus really died for you) Ohh

My eldest sister, Deborah, is a fantastic piano player. Our entire family plays the piano except my father, who had always wanted to play, but never found the time to learn. So, he made us all learn. Good thing, too; it's really paid off for Deborah.

She has played for the NC governor, in hotels and resorts, bars and restaurants, and even on a cruise ship once, I think. She was the pianist for a well-known dinner theater in NC back in the 80s and I remember distinctly that one of the shows was West Side Story. She's cut three CDs over the years of her own compositions and arrangements of songs, and has materials for another two or three. Hearing her music and piano playing is so nostalgic to me.

Deborah currently plays at a restaurant in the Grove Park Resort & Spa in Asheville, NC. She sent me a note this morning that she played for a lady last night whose husband founded the Gennett Lumber & Hardware Company in Tennessee, which I found interesting. There's a memoir mentioned at the company's website and I might buy it. For those who are biography enthusiasts, this might be an interesting read.

A minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great emphasis he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river."

With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river!"

And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he yelled even louder, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river!"

Sermon complete, the minister sat down, wiping beads of sweat off his brow. The choir leader stood very cautiously and announced, with a smile, nearly laughing, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn #365, 'Shall We Gather at the River.'"

I'm sure not many people have heard of this group, but I wanted to remember them. I love their music and have often touted them as a quintessential 80s band - and within reason. They didn't last together beyond the 80s! None of my closest friends have EVER heard of them - outside of me bringing them up. I wish they had done more! Here's a review of them off YouTube and a "video" of one of their songs (one of their songs was even in Miami Vice in the 80s!):

Here's a review )
